Kirinyaga county lies on Mt. Kenya’s slopes and coffee is grown from 1310 to 1900 masl. The area’s red volcanic soils are rich in organic material and roughly 1518 mm of rain falls across Kirinyaga’s two wet seasons.

Most coffee planted is SL28 or SL34 varietals, with some Riuru 11 and Batian. A total of 54,047 coffee growers are active members of the county’s 16 cooperative societies, processing coffee grown on around 6,245 hectares of smallholder farms. Estimated annual production is 5,870 metric tons.
